With all the thoughts and words that have to come together to make sense for your reader, writing can get very overwhelming!

Don’t worry, it’s not just you!

It happens to all writers, even me, so today I wanted to let you in on one of my secrets to handling overwhelm…

To give you context, I take a poetry/creative writing class. The writing is very different from what I normally do so it stretches me, and I love being around the people in the class!

In class this week, they shared this poem by novelist Christopher Moore. It is a great way to think about writing when you’re overwhelmed so I wanted to share it with you.

Have fun with writing.
Be as silly and off the
wall as you want to be.
Yes, you should learn
how to write a sentence
and a paragraph and
you should learn how
to tell a story, but it’s
always good to remember
that good writing
entertains, even as it
accomplishes its other
goals. So entertain
yourself while you’re
doing it. There are
few experiences more
fun than thinking up a
great story. Writing it
can sometimes be hard
work, but even when
plodding through the
work of putting down
prose, occasionally you
can have a great time
turning a phrase or
crafting a particularly
musical line. Enjoy it.

My takeaway? It’s always important to remember to have fun and enjoy the process — especially in a first draft!

Happy writing,
Karen

P.S. What part of writing overwhelms you the most? Let me know!
